AI, Tech, and Music (A Positive Take)
Hello friends!
In today’s world, music is more than just an art form – it’s a technological marvel. From the way we create music to how we consume it, tech innovation is at the heart of this evolution. Now when it comes to AI, it’s such an interesting topic (and time to be alive… period) because on one hand it is mind blowing what is possible, and on the other it is absolutely terrifying because a lot of us creators feel uncertain about our jobs in the future. All of that being said, for this blog post I want to focus simply on the positive side, showcasing a number of interesting advancements from a tech and evolutionary perspective. Don’t worry, I’ll follow up with all of my fears in a forthcoming article.
A…I…
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has begun to play a significant role in music production. AI algorithms can now compose music, analyze trends, and maybe even predict the next big hit. Companies like OpenAI, with their project Jukedeck, have developed AI that can generate music based on user input. This allows artists to explore new creative possibilities and streamline their production process (or shall I say, potentially skip it entirely).
For instance, Taryn Southern's album "I AM AI", released in 2018, was one of the first albums entirely composed with the help of AI tools. This groundbreaking work demonstrates how AI can serve as a collaborator in the creative process, offering new sounds and ideas that might not have been discovered otherwise.
Streaming Services and Data Analytics
The way we listen to music has also been revolutionized by streaming services like Spotify, Apple Music, and Tidal. These platforms not only offer vast libraries of songs but also use sophisticated algorithms to analyze our listening habits and recommend new music tailored to our tastes. This personalized experience keeps listeners engaged and helps artists reach the right audience.
Spotify, for example, uses machine learning to create personalized playlists like Discover Weekly and Release Radar. These playlists are generated by analyzing user data, including listening history, song likes, and skips, to predict what songs a user might enjoy. This data-driven approach has fundamentally changed how we discover new music and connect with artists (TechCrunch). This aspect as far as curation seems positive.
Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR)
VR and AR technologies are opening new frontiers in music experiences. Virtual concerts and immersive music videos are becoming increasingly popular, providing fans with unique, interactive ways to engage with their favorite artists.
One notable example is the VR music video for The Weeknd's song "The Hills", which allows fans to experience the music in a fully immersive 360-degree environment. Similarly, apps like MelodyVR enable users to attend live concerts from the comfort of their homes, offering different viewing angles and interactive features that make the experience engaging in a whole new way.
Blockchain and Music Rights
Blockchain technology is also making waves in the music industry, particularly in the realm of music rights and royalties. By providing a transparent and immutable ledger, blockchain can ensure that artists are fairly compensated for their work. This aspect intrigues me a lot as there has been so much grey area and lack of transparency in the world of music royalties.
Platforms like Audius use blockchain to give artists more control over their music distribution and earnings. This decentralized approach reduces the dependency on traditional intermediaries, allowing for more direct and equitable revenue streams for artists.
The Future of Music Innovation
As technology continues to advance, the possibilities for music innovation are endless. From AI and VR to blockchain and beyond, each new development opens up exciting opportunities for artists and listeners alike. Let’s hope us creators can weather this technical evolution, keep evolving and not only stay afloat, but find new ways to thrive.
Stay tuned for more updates on the intersection of music and technology. Until next time, keep exploring and enjoying the ever-evolving world of music!
See you on my next post!
